The Defence Headquarters has denied that the Nigerian government has a ceasefire deal with any faction of Boko Haram.

Speaking at a joint security briefing in Abuja on Thursday, defence spokesman Samaila Uba said there was nothing like a ceasefire with the group. He said troops had continued to kill and arrest insurgents and rescue their victims, and would keep up the pressure on them and on kidnappers and other criminals.

The New Humanitarian reported in September that the government had quietly agreed a truce in June with a Boko Haram faction led by Bakura Doro, as part of efforts to free more than 300 people abducted from Ngoshe in Borno State in March. The reported deal did not include ISWAP. Another outlet, HumAngle, later quoted a Boko Haram judge denying that any truce existed.

The presidency declined to comment on the reports and referred questions to the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Defence.
