The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has uncovered an illegal oil refinery at Ogere in Ogun State that is believed to have been run by Chinese nationals.

Officers from the commission's Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 raided the site on Saturday, 31 October, the EFCC said in a statement on Tuesday. They found it empty. Left behind were underground tanks thought to be used for heating crude sludge, along with waste from the refining process.

Early findings suggest the operators bought black sludge oil from Warri in Delta State and Port Harcourt in Rivers State. The sludge was heated so the lighter parts could be drawn off by passing them through filters and chambers, most likely to make diesel for sale.

Security guards at the site told investigators the operators never gave their names or said which company owned the facility. No arrests have been announced, and the EFCC says its investigation is continuing.

The discovery comes months after the agency arrested 14 Chinese nationals and a Nigerian in the same area over alleged illegal processing of lithium.
