President Donald Trump says the United States will stop paying Israel the roughly $4 billion it gives the country each year, once 2026 ends.

Speaking on Fox News on Tuesday, as Americans went to the polls, Mr Trump said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed months ago to end the payments. He said Israel no longer needs the money, but added that Washington would still help if Israel needed it.

It is not yet clear exactly which forms of support would be affected, and the State Department did not immediately explain the plan. Much of the aid is military, and spending of this kind is normally set by Congress, which could limit what the White House can change on its own.

Support for Israel has been a growing point of division in US politics. In July, the House of Representatives voted 314 to 104 against a proposal to cut off aid, with close to half of Democrats backing the cut.
