The JNPSNC says the allowance will be paid from November whatever other unions think.

The body that represents federal civil servants in wage talks has thrown its weight behind the ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance, in a sharp reply to the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In a circular signed by its national secretary, Gbenga Olowoyo, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) said the TUC was not part of the talks that produced the deal, which was signed on 27 October.

The council said the TUC was free to hold its own view, but if it believed workers deserved more than ₦70,000, it should go and negotiate a better offer itself.

It also rejected claims that the Nigeria Labour Congress, which signed the agreement, speaks only for junior staff, saying its member unions cover workers up to directorate level.

The council said no union's objection would stop the agreement from being carried out. Federal workers are due to receive the allowance every month for six months starting in November, although questions remain over which categories of staff will qualify.
