INEC traces fake and AI-made photos on voters' register to its own officers
PauseandPonderTV · Mon, 2 Nov 2026The commission says it is cleaning up the records before the final register on 15 December.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says some of its own registration officers were behind the fake and AI-generated photographs found on the preliminary voters' register.
INEC's Director of ICT, Dr Lawrence Bayode, said in a television interview that some of the suspicious images were created with artificial intelligence, while others were the result of very poor registration practice.
According to Bayode, officers in several states used their personal login details to upload the faulty entries. The commission's biometric identification system, known as ABIS, flagged the problem and showed how it was done. He said he could not yet say why the officers did it.
INEC says it is reviewing the affected records, checking for technical or procedural failures and removing bad data. It has promised to act on whatever its investigation confirms, but has not announced any sanctions.
The preliminary register went online on 26 October. The final register is due to be certified on 15 December, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
