The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says its checks on the preliminary voters' register have turned up 268 records with suspected AI-generated photos or other problems.

INEC's Director of ICT, Lawrence Bayode, said on Channels Television's Sunday Politics that the entries were flagged by the commission's biometric identification system, ABIS.

He said some people appear to have abused a special option meant for voters with disabilities, including those with missing or incomplete fingers, to create doubtful profiles. Screenshots of strange photos, many said to be from parts of Edo State, had spread online after the register was published on 26 October.

INEC says it is examining each record before acting and has begun deleting fake images. Photos that are genuine but were enhanced by a phone's built-in AI will stay. The commission is also investigating how the images got into its system.

The register now has about 103 million names, up from just over 90 million, a jump some critics have questioned. INEC plans to certify the final register on 15 December.
