Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has ordered an investigation into the violence that broke out at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in Lafia on Wednesday.

About 40 people were reportedly injured in clashes at the event. Tear gas was used near the podium, and an object, believed to be a shoe, was thrown towards the stage where Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu, stood with governors. There were also reports of an attack on the Vice President's convoy. No deaths were reported.

Announcing the probe after a state executive council meeting on Thursday, Sule told security agencies to question anyone suspected of involvement, whatever their status, and to go after those who planned or paid for the disruption rather than only the young people at the scene.

The state government has accused former governor Umaru Al-Makura and the SDP governorship candidate, Adamu Abubakar, of links to the trouble. Neither man's response to the claim has been reported, and the allegations have not been proven.

The violence follows an attack on Peter Obi's convoy in Calabar the same day and an assault on Omoyele Sowore's team in Ado-Ekiti last week, deepening worries about the tone of the 2027 campaigns.
