The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed three senior police officers and demoted 16 others over misconduct.
The decisions were taken at a plenary meeting in Abuja on Tuesday led by the commission's chairman, Hashimu Argungu, a retired deputy inspector-general of police. They were made public on Wednesday by PSC spokesman Torty Kalu.
The commission also handed severe reprimands to 21 officers and ordinary reprimands to two more. Three officers were cleared of wrongdoing, and some who had been on suspension were allowed back into the force.
The PSC did not reveal the names or ranks of the officers affected, or what each of them had done.
Argungu said the commission would not tolerate corruption, human rights abuses or police involvement in land and other civil disputes, and promised faster handling of pending disciplinary cases.
