One person is feared dead and several others were injured when a bus carrying women supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) crashed in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Friday.

The women were reportedly travelling to Victor Attah International Airport to welcome President Bola Tinubu, who began a two-day visit to Akwa Ibom and Rivers states on Friday.

According to reports, the bus, which belongs to the Akwa Ibom State Transport Corporation, collided with a Toyota Hilux van used by security agents on Oron Road. Both vehicles were badly damaged. Video from the scene shows people trying to lift the overturned van.

Paul James, spokesman for road safety operations at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Akwa Ibom, confirmed the crash and said a rescue team had been sent to the scene. He said the command had not yet established how many people were hurt or what caused the collision.

Neither the police nor the state government had given an official death toll at the time of publishing. The victims' names and the hospital where the injured were taken have not been released.

Tinubu is in Uyo to open several state government projects, including a new international terminal at the airport, before an APC rally in Port Harcourt on Saturday. The crash comes days after violence at the party's rally in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
