Cristiano Ronaldo has ended his international career with Portugal, bringing down the curtain on one of the greatest records in football history.
The 41-year-old announced the decision in a video on Instagram on Thursday, 5 November, a day before coach Jorge Jesus named his squad for Nations League games against Denmark and Wales. He said it had not been an easy decision.
Ronaldo leaves with 146 goals in 234 matches for Portugal, the most appearances and goals by any player in the country's men's team history.
His exit follows a public dispute with Jesus. Ronaldo had served a 30-day suspension for walking out of the national team camp. He admitted that leaving was not the best way to handle the situation, but accused the coach of breaking his word more than once. Jesus said he had asked Ronaldo to stay and that he learned of the retirement at the same time as the public. He says the two have not spoken since.
Ronaldo, who continues to play club football, won the European Championship in 2016 and the Nations League twice with Portugal.
