Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has turned down the title of Senior Counsel of Nigeria (SCN), known as the 'Blue Silk', which was conferred on him this week.

The title was reportedly given by the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) at its 2026 annual general conference in Utako, Abuja, on Thursday, 5 November. Four other lawyers were also honoured: Seyi Tinubu, the President's son, Olufunmilayo Osifuye, Ihudiebube Chukwumdi and Alabi Adigun.

In a statement on Friday, Fani-Kayode said he had not personally authorised anyone to accept the title on his behalf, and described the acceptance by his representative as an unfortunate administrative mistake. He also raised questions about the legal and professional implications of the honour.

The NLS is a separate body from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The best-known senior title for Nigerian lawyers, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is awarded by the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee.

The NLS had not responded to Fani-Kayode's rejection at the time of publishing.
