Tehran marked the anniversary of the 1979 embassy seizure with rallies, as officials claimed US voters had rejected the war.

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has warned Iranians not to expect a change in US policy after Democrats won control of Congress.

In a written statement on his website, he said anyone who believed partisan changes in Washington or concessions from Tehran would reduce American hostility was mistaken. He also warned that any new US attack would be met with a much wider Iranian response.

Other Iranian officials welcomed the midterm results. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's chief negotiator with the US, said American voters had rejected war.

His remarks coincided with nationwide rallies remembering the day in 1979 when students stormed the American embassy in Tehran, where protesters burned US and Israeli flags.

Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli strike in February at the start of the war. He has not been seen in public since. President Trump has acknowledged the war may have cost Republicans votes, but has not ruled out further strikes.
