Police in Ogun State have detained a pastor of the Celestial Church of Christ over allegations that he sexually abused his 16-year-old stepdaughter, according to a human rights group following the case.

The Lagos branch of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) says it wrote to the Divisional Police Officer in Shimawa on 26 October, and that the petition was acknowledged the next day.

According to the group, the abuse allegedly began when the girl was younger and went on for years, and she says she was threatened to keep her silent.

The CDHR says officers then invited the pastor, the girl's mother and another church minister for questioning. The pastor and the mother were held after making statements, and the girl was examined at a government hospital on 28 October, with the findings passed to investigators.

The Ogun State Police Command had not commented publicly by Saturday evening, and no charge has been reported. The pastor has not responded to the allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

PauseandPonderTV is not naming the suspect or giving further details of where the family lives, to protect the identity of the child.
